Description

The Haus der Kulturen der Welt ("House of World Cultures") is an art institution presenting exhibitions, theater and dance performances, concerts, author readings, films and congresses on non-European art and culture. The House of World Cultures is one of the few institutions which due to their national and international standing and the quality of their work receive funding from the federal government as so-called "light-houses of culture". The House of World Cultures is located in Berlin in a building formerly known as the Kongresshalle. The building, which was designed by the American architect Hugh Stubbins, is also known as Schwangere Auster ("pregnant oyster"). The building is in the Tiergarten and a direct neigbour to the Chancellery.
